On August 12th, 2023, we hosted our second annual tomato tasting, Tomatotopia on the Farm. This fun event is a great way to get customer feedback about new tomato varieties we are trialing and geek out about all things tomatoes.
This year we were blessed by perfect weather and the addition of a shade structure on the farm! In addition to our productive crop fields, the farm is slowly and surely becoming an enjoyable and comfortable space for hosting events.
This year’s tasting was a blind test to prevent our varieties’ names from swaying any results. We tested the following tomatoes, all grown on our certified organic seed farm:
Dixie Giant
Dwarf Banana
Dwarf Blazing Beauty
Dwarf Sweet Sue
Red Rief
Attendees also sampled our amazing Dezi Sungold tomatoes and unique new tomatillo variety, Chupon De Malinalco.
After all the attendees had a chance to try every tomato, we tallied up the results based on appearance, flavor, and texture. Here are the winners:
Drumroll, please.
First Place: Bo Mango received the highest scores across the board. Bo Mango’s tropical flavors and firmer texture won over our taste testers. They noted its green color as being different and appealing.
Second Place: Rosella Purple won second place, slipping in favor from first place last year. Our taste testers raved that this tomato had the most complex and deepest, robust flavor. It’s a personal favorite of mine!
Third Place: Our taste testers voted Dwarf Wilpena the best across-the-board great-flavored red tomato. This medium-sized tomato has numerous kitchen applications, from salsas and sauces to being tossed in salads or placed on a sandwich.
Other honorable mentions were Dwarf Snakebite, Dwarf Lucky Swirl, and Dwarf Franklin County.
Our tomato tasting is an annual event. See our online calendar and subscribe to our newsletter to learn about upcoming tastings, tours, and workshops on the farm. Tickets are available through Eventbrite, where you can view past events too.
