For the most prolific watermelons, plant in the summer season when soils are warm. Because watermelons enjoy warm temperatures and ample moisture, water deeply and mulch evenly around the plants to ensure moisture retention in the soil. Avoid overhead watering if possible to prevent foliar diseases.
