Heirloom tomato seeds are by far our most popular seed category. Most gardeners know and love the diversity of flavors, colors, shapes, and growing habits of heirloom tomato seeds. They are a large part of what has revamped interest in gardening in the last 20 years. The flavor of an heirloom tomato is incomparable to that of a store-bought tomato! Where did these seeds come from? Heirloom seeds in general, not just tomato seeds, refer to a group of seeds that are most often open-pollinated and of older origins. In the example of heirloom tomato seeds, most varieties are more than 50 years old. They have not been altered, bred, or improved to have the qualities that modern commercial tomato growers desire today. Those are traits like the ability to ship well, store for long periods of time, and ripen off the vine. By contrast, heirloom tomato seeds do not typically store well, can have cat facing or other superficial marks, and do not ship well. They do, however, have some of the most incredible flavors! With flavors ranging from super sweet to super meaty, they provide growers with a wide range of tomatoes to enjoy. Because these seed varieties have not typically been bred to improve yield, they can sometimes produce less than hybrid or improved tomato varieties, but the flavor is well worth it! Plant our in your garden today to taste and experience the difference in flavor you will love!
