Important growing requirements: Starting seeds indoors is recommended to reduce competition with weeds. You may also direct sow. Onion seeds have the shortest viability of all common vegetables so make sure your seeds are fresh.

Planting recommendations: Plant in soil with compost worked in. When growing onions, spacing is the most important factor in creating bulbs. Be sure to thin them to at least 5″ apart to allow bulbs to form.

Harvesting and Storage: Harvest onions when tops are brown and fall over. Lift bulbs carefully out of the ground. Leave bulbs in a warm and dry location to cure for 2-3 weeks. Bruising will result in rotting.
