Product Information

Dara Daucus stands out in the garden! This cut flower is actually a carrot. You might recognize it by a common name like Queen Anne’s lace, ornamental carrot, wild carrot, lace flower, and others.

Dara Daucus seeds produce sturdy, airy umbel-shaped flowers in unique shades of dark purple, pink, and white. Pollinators love them! Their large, lacy umbels are 3–5″ across and plants grow up to 50″ tall. They are non-fussy, long-lasting in bouquets, and highly productive with 7–15 stems per plant.

Planting by Zones

Zones 9-10

  • Dara is a cool season plant that is best started in the fall and winter months in Zones 9 and 10 when temperatures are around 60–70°F. Direct sow (recommended) or begin seeds in a seed starting tray 4–6 weeks before planting out. Seeds benefit from 1–2 weeks of chilling at 40–45°F before sowing in a greenhouse.

Zones 2-8

  • Start indoors 6–8 weeks before the last frost or direct sow (recommended) in spring after the threat of frost is gone.

Planting Dara Seeds

  • Dara is most easily direct sown into the garden. Plant seeds in debris-free, well-worked soil that has been pre-irrigated. Cover thinly with 1/4″ of finely sifted soil as seeds need some light to sprout.
  • Once the seedlings have germinated and have a first set of true leaves be sure to fertilize regularly with an organic liquid fertilizer.
  • Plants that have been started indoors are best transplanted out into the garden when they are 3–5″ tall.
  • Grown en masse, these flowers will add a dramatic touch to your garden.

Growing Dara Seeds

  • Dara does not require pinching.
  • Keep your plants weed-free by pulling any weeds that may compete.
  • Dara can grow 50″ tall. Plants benefit from support to keep their wiry stems upright, particularly in windy areas.

Succession Planting Dara Seeds

  • Start a new round of seeds every 14 days for harvestable bouquet filler all season long.

Growing Dara Seeds in Containers

  • Dara may be grown in deep containers that will support their length and weight. Keep in mind containers will dry out faster because they have more surface area and less soil to hold onto moisture.

Harvesting Dara

  • Dara makes a gorgeous filler for cut and dried flower arrangements. Harvest when at least 80% of the lacy umbels have fully opened and are lying flat. Fresh cut flowers have a vase life of 6–8 days.
  • We recommend wearing gloves while harvesting as sap from the plants can be irritating to the skin.

Southern California Pro-tips

  • Mulch heavily around your plants to ensure the soil does not dry out or heat up too much. Compost added to the soil at the time of planting will help retain moisture in the soil during hot, dry weather.
  • During our hottest months, plants can suffer from the heat. Using shade cloth can help protect the plants from extreme heat.

Companion Flowers/Crops

  • Dara is a charming ornamental flower with a unique color palette of dark purples, pinks, and whites. Its delicate and airy umbels pair well with larkspur, scabiosas, cornflowers, and poppies. Dara will attract pollinators and beneficial insects to your garden.
