Product Information

Dwarf strawflower is a neat addition to your cut flower garden! Blooms are exceptionally durable and great for making arrangements. Growing just 18″ tall, this colorful mix is ideal for growing in containers. Flowers come in pink, yellow, white, orange, and red shades that bloom well into fall. Seeds require light to germinate. Sow very close to the soil’s surface, covering only with the slightest dusting of finely sifted soil.

Planting by Zones

Zones 9-10

  • Plant in spring for blooms until late fall. Can grow as a short-lived perennial in mild climates.

Zones 2-8

  • Start indoors 3-5 weeks before the last frost. Transplant out after the danger of frost is gone.

Planting Strawflower Seeds

  • We recommend that you transplant strawflowers into the garden after beginning them in starter pots. Strawflower seeds are small and should be sown on the soil’s surface as they need light for germination. Sprinkle seeds on top of well-moistened quality seed starting soil and cover only with a light dusting of finely sifted soil. Bottom water or mist gently to water the seeds. Do not water with a heavy spray as this will cover the seeds with displaced soil.

Growing Strawflower

  • Strawflower prefers full sun and well-drained soil. You’ll find that strawflower is easy to grow and care for once is established.

Growing Strawflower in Containers

  • If you are planting strawflowers in containers, make sure your container is at least 10″ deep. The larger the container, the more blooms you will get from your strawflower. Keep in mind containers will dry out faster because they have more surface area and less soil to hold onto moisture.
  • Dwarf varieties of strawflower, like those in this mix, are ideal for containers. Our Sultan mix strawflower seeds include varieties of strawflower that grow 36-40″ inches tall and are better suited for growing in the ground.

Harvesting Strawflower Flowers

  • Dwarf mix strawflower produces small colorful blooms that hold well in flower arrangements. The more blooms you harvest, the more blooms the plant will produce. Harvest blooms after the first 2-3 layers of petals have unfolded but before the flowers are fully open. The flowers also dry well and last for extended periods. Hang to dry.

Southern California Pro-tips

  • In Zones 9 and 10, strawflower will grow happily from early spring until late fall.
  • Mulch heavily to ensure the soil stays cool and well-watered.
  • DO NOT overhead water as this promotes disease.

Succession Planting Tips

  • Plant more seeds every three weeks to guarantee a prolonged blooming period.

Companion Flowers/Crops

  • Strawflower grows well with other cut flowers.
  • We recommend planting a cut flower garden using strawflower, zinnia, sunflowers, and scabiosa. You will have beautiful blooms to use for arrangements all spring, summer, and fall!
