Container Gardening

Don't have a lot of space? Try container gardening! Growing in containers is an easy and efficient way to grow in urban areas and small spaces. Container gardening presents its own challenges, so we've put together crops that thrive in containers due to their size and growing habits. As a container gardener, it's important to remember that because containers have more surface area and less soil mass, they will dry out quicker. In warm climates like Zones 9 and 10, growers should plant in large containers whenever possible. Add mulch on top of the soil to prevent evaporation and place saucers at the base of the container to catch water.  The joys and benefits of container gardening are numerous. Advantages of container gardening include the ability to fill containers with the best soils. Additionally, containers can be mobile, protected from gophers and other burying animals, and kept on a patio, in a small yard, or even indoors. If you are a brand new gardener, try container gardening to get started. You will learn so much, and the investment is minimal.  Here are our pro-tips. Use containers that have drainage holes. When filling your containers, make sure you add a variety of products for the best soil mix. We suggest using a combination of 30% compost, 50% high-quality potting mix, 10% worm castings, and 10% well-composted manure. This mixture will help prevent containers from drying out too quickly. Always mulch around plants in the container when you can! No matter where you live or the space you have, gardening is possible! Growing in small urban spaces is just one way to make the world a better place by growing food right where you will consume it. It cuts down on transportation costs, allows families to grow their own delicious organic produce, and is a small but profound way to connect with nature and the earth.
