Description

Waltham Butternut Squash seeds produce uniform and delicious fruits with sweet flesh great for baking and cooking. This variety of butternut squash is by far the most popular. Known for making butternut squash soup, it has attractive, uniform, bell-like shaped features. Waltham is medium-sized with excellent flavor. Fruits can weigh up to 6 lbs! The creamy, rich, yellow-orange flesh has a nutty taste. These vines can be aggressive so plant spacing is important.

Suggested Planting Requirements: Waltham needs plenty of space so plan your planting area accordingly. A pH level of 6.0-7.0 with loose fertile soil is optimal. Saline soils should be avoided.

Growing Recommendations: Place squash in full sun with protection from heavy cool winds. Squash is slightly drought tolerant but you’ll want to keep the soil fairly moist for juicier fruits. As with most cucurbits, mounding provides an optimal growing area.

Harvesting & Storing: Harvest butternut squash at the end of the season when the squash has matured fully on the vine. The squash should have a hard outer rind. You can leave butternut squash in the garden until the vines die. Butternut can be kept for up to 6 months in a cool, dry dark area. When you are ready to cook the squash, we like to cut it in half and place it in a slow cooker. Then we scoop out the meat to make soups, pies, and more! Here is an example of how to cook the squash.

Did you know that winter squash are not grown in the winter but are rather stored in the winter? That is how they got their name! Many winter squashes can be kept for months right on the countertop. Check out all our squash here!
