Waltham Butternut Squash seeds produce a uniform and delicious fruits with sweet flesh great for baking and cooking. This variety of butternut squash is by far the most popular. Known for making butternut squash soup, it has an attractive uniform, bell-like shaped features. Waltham is medium size with excellent flavor. Fruits can weigh up to 6 lbs! Having a creamy, rich, yellow-orange flesh with a nutty flavor. These vines can be aggressive so plant spacing is important.
Suggested Planting Requirements: Waltham needs plenty of space so plan your planting area accordingly. A Ph level of 6.0-7.0 with loose fertile soil is optimal. Saline soils should be avoided.
Growing Recommendations: Place squash in full sun with protection from heavy cool winds. Keep the soil fairly moist to bring juicer fruits, but squash is slightly drought tolerant. As with most cucurbits, mounding provides an optimal growing area.
Harvesting & Storing: Harvest butternut squash at the end of the season when the squash has matured fully on the vine. The squash should have a hard outer rind. You can leave butternut squash in the garden until the vines die. Butternut can be kept for up to 6 months in a cool, dry dark area. When you are ready to cook the squash, we like to cut it in half and place it in a slow cooker. Then we scoop out the meat to make soups, pies and more! Here is an example of how to cook the squash.
