Product Information
Blue Sage is a tender perennial that is native to many parts of the Southwest. Beautiful blue spikes attract butterflies and other pollinators. This easy to grow plant makes for fragrant cut flowers and works well in naturalized gardens. Blue Sage makes a great addition to our Butterfly mix.
Planting by Zones
Zones 9-10
- Plant in fall before seasonal rains for blooms until late summer.
Zones 2-8
- Grown as annual. Start seed indoors 8-10 weeks before the last frost. Transplant out after the danger of frost is gone.
Planting Sage Seeds
- Seeds are small and should be sown close to the surface of the soil. If you are starting the seeds indoors in transplants or in starter pots, start seeds in a high-quality seed starting mix. Sprinkle the seed on top of well-moistened seed starting soil and cover with ¼” of finely sifted soil. Seeds will germinate in 15-21 or more days.
Growing Sage
- Blue Sage can perennialize in mild climates but is likely to die back during cold winters. The plant will grow 1-2″ tall and produce dazzling spikes of blue blooms that attract hummingbirds and pollinators. Enjoy the beautiful blooms that are great for cut flowers and have a long-lasting fragrance.
Growing Sage in Containers
- If you are planting in containers, make sure your container is at least 10″ deep. The larger the container, the more blooms you will get from your sage. Keep in mind containers will dry out faster because they have more surface area and less soil to hold onto moisture.
Harvesting Sage Flowers
- Blue Sage flowers make great cut flowers with an intoxicating fragrance. Cut flowers early in the morning and put them directly in a vase of water for the longest-lasting blooms. You can dry the flowers too!
Southern California Pro-tips
- In Zones 9 and 10, Blue sage will grow happily from early spring until late fall.
- DO NOT overhead water as this promotes disease.
Companion Flowers/Crops for Blue Sage
