Product Information
Our certified organic turnip seeds are easy to grow and yield crisp, tender roots that are perfect for salads, soups, and roasting. Turnips are a cool-season crop, thriving in early spring and fall, and are known for their quick growth and nutritious harvest.
Planting Your Turnip Seeds
- Plant in well-drained, fertile soil with plenty of organic matter and a sunny to partly sunny location.
- Direct sow seeds outdoors 1/2 inch deep and 1 inch apart when the soil temperature reaches 50°F (10°C) for early spring planting, or in late summer for a fall harvest.
- Thin seedlings to 4-6 inches apart to allow for proper root development and prevent overcrowding.
- Turnips grow best in cooler temperatures (50-75°F) and can be harvested before the first frost for the best flavor.
Planting by Zones
Zones 8-10:
- Sow turnip seeds in late summer or early fall for a fall harvest. Turnips can overwinter in the garden in mild climates.
Zones 3-7:
- Direct sow turnip seeds in early spring as soon as the soil can be worked, or in late summer for a fall crop.
Growing and Caring for Turnips
- Turnips prefer rich, well-drained soil that is high in organic matter.
- Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during dry periods, to support healthy root growth.
- Regularly weed the area around your turnips to reduce competition for nutrients and water.
- Turnips benefit from occasional feeding with a balanced fertilizer, especially in nutrient-poor soils.
Harvesting Your Turnips
- Harvest turnips when the roots are 2-3 inches in diameter, usually 30-60 days from sowing.
- Turnips can be pulled as needed, or harvested all at once once they reach the desired size.
- Store harvested turnips in a cool, dry place, or in the refrigerator for up to a week.
Companion Flowers/Crops
- Turnips grow well alongside radishes, peas, and lettuce, which can help improve soil health and reduce pest issues. Planting flowers like calendulas and nasturtiums can also help deter pests and boost garden vitality.
Turnips are versatile and can be grown in garden beds or containers. Whether you’re using them for fresh salads or hearty soups, you’ll appreciate the crisp, homegrown flavor of turnips!
