Product Information
Our certified organic leek seeds are easy to grow and produce long, tender stalks perfect for soups, stews, and more. Leeks are a cool-weather crop, thriving in early spring and fall, and are known for their reliable, extended harvest season.
Planting Your Leek Seeds
- Plant in fertile, well-drained soil with plenty of organic matter and a sunny location.
- Start seeds indoors 8-10 weeks before your last spring frost, then transplant seedlings when they are about 6-8 inches tall.
- Space seedlings 6-8 inches apart in rows spaced 12-18 inches apart. For blanching, plant leeks in trenches that you gradually fill as they grow to encourage long, tender stalks.
- Leeks thrive in cooler temperatures (55-75°F) and can tolerate light frosts, making them perfect for both spring and fall plantings.
Planting Leek Seeds by Zones
Zones 8-10:
- Plant leeks in the fall or winter for a late winter or spring harvest.
Zones 3-7:
- Start leeks indoors in late winter and transplant outdoors in early spring, or sow directly outdoors in late summer for a fall crop.
Growing and Caring for Leeks
- Leeks prefer rich, well-composted soil that retains moisture without becoming waterlogged.
- Water consistently, especially during dry spells, to keep the soil evenly moist.
- Mound soil or mulch around the stalks as they grow to blanch them, producing tender, pale stems.
- Leeks are slow-growing and benefit from regular feeding with a balanced fertilizer during the growing season.
Harvesting Your Leeks
- Harvest when the stalks are at least 1 inch in diameter, usually 80-120 days from transplant.
- You can begin harvesting as needed, leaving smaller leeks in the ground to continue growing.
- Store harvested leeks in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.
Companion Flowers/Crops
- Leeks grow well alongside carrots, celery, and beets, which help improve soil conditions and repel pests. Flowers like marigolds and nasturtiums can also enhance garden health and deter harmful insects.
Leeks are versatile, ideal for both garden beds and containers. Whether you’re growing them for hearty soups or simply to add a delicate onion flavor to dishes, you’ll love the fresh, homegrown taste of leeks!
