Product Information
Delicious, sweet, and crunchy asparagus is a great side to any meal, and nothing is more delicious than getting it out of your garden! Planting asparagus seeds takes patience and a place to dedicate to yearly growth in your garden. It’s worth it!
This product was originally sourced for our VIP Seed Of The Month Club members, and with many requests, we have introduced it into our catalog.
A tried and true SoCal variety, this hybrid variety of asparagus was bred and developed at UC Riverside.
Planting Asparagus Seeds
Plant asparagus seeds in the spring in an area that gets full sun. For Zones 9 and 10, you can easily plant asparagus in the cool season and let them establish with the seasonal rains. For gardeners outside Zones 9 and 10, wait until the soil warms in spring. Asparagus seeds benefit from being soaked in water before planting to speed germination.
It’s best to choose a location on the edge of your garden to leave asparagus to grow for the several seasons it needs to get established. Make sure you add compost and worm castings for the best results. Asparagus plants need moisture all year round but do not like to sit in soggy, waterlogged beds.Â
Managing Asparagus Beds
When growing your asparagus in the first two seasons, you must ensure that your plants do not unnecessarily compete with weeds. Weed your beds well and often to allow your asparagus to thrive. Mulch for moisture retention in the soil as well as to help control weeds.
Side dress asparagus beds each season with a granular fertilizer like our Darn Good Fertilizer.
Harvesting Asparagus
Resist the urge to harvest this perennial crop for the first two years while the plants direct energy into root development. You will see prolific production in the coming seasons, and your patience will pay off!
Harvest asparagus spears at 6–10 inches long — cut at ground level or bend the spears to snap them carefully by hand.
