Product Information
Tetra Mix Snapdragon is a semi-dwarf snapdragon yielding clusters of aromatic bell-shaped blooms in shades of pink, purple, red, yellow, and white. It entices bumblebees, offering the spectacle of observing them engage in pollination by skillfully “opening the dragon’s mouth.”
Light is required for germination; press seeds lightly into the soil but do not cover them. This cottage garden favorite doubles as a cut flower and is adaptable to growing in containers.
Planting by Zones
Zones 9-10
- Snapdragons are essential flowers in the cottage garden and cutting garden. Transplanting is recommended as seeds are very small and require light to germinate. Sow them directly on the surface for the best results. Sowing seeds can happen in late winter to allow time to get plants up to size for planting out.
- Snapdragons cannot handle extreme heat in Zones 9 and 10. Plant in containers that can be moved into cooler conditions in the heat of the summer or plant early enough to enjoy before extreme summer heat. Tetra Mix Snapdragon is semi-dwarf, perfect for large containers! Good soil, watering often and adding mulch will increase blooms and plant longevity.
Zones 3-8
- Start 8–10 weeks before the last frost indoors. Transplant out after the danger of frost is gone.
Planting Snapdragon
- Snapdragons are not hard to grow from seed. Just be patient as they are germinating and keep the soil moist the entire time. A fine layer of vermiculate or perlite can be added to the top level of the soil to help reduce fungal issues that can occur with the soil being moist for a longer period.
Growing Snapdragons
- Snapdragons do great in containers and can be harvested for cut flower arrangements all spring and summer long.
Southern California Pro-tips
- Plant snapdragons in good soil that has ample organic matter. This will help to retain moisture and keep snapdragons happier for longer.
