Tomato – Costoluto Genovese

This deeply ribbed tomato is prized for its excellent flavor. This Italian favorite is used for fresh eating and preserving. Very popular among Chefs for its robust flavor and high acidity. A great tomato for dry climates. Indeterminate tomato. 

Suggested Planting Requirements: Tomatoes can be direct sown or transplanted. For direct sowing, garden beds must be prepped, and soil should be above 60 degrees.  If you decide to transplant,  start seeds in the greenhouse six weeks before the last frost, then you can transplant them into your garden. Tomatoes are unique in that they can be buried very deep. The tiny white hairs on the vegetable stalk will actually form roots. Some gardeners suggest planting them sideways.  Tomatoes love fertile soil rich in organic matter. Add plenty of compost before planting. Soil pH is preferred between 5.5 and 7.0.  Soil should be moist at planting time.  Watering should be done at weekly intervals and over watering avoided. To prevent disease, avoid overhead watering and water at the soil level.

Growing Recommendations:   Tomatoes require full sun for healthy and fast growth. A balanced organic fertilizer should be added before planting in the garden.  If you are aware of calcium deficiencies in your soil, it is likely your tomatoes will suffer from blossom end rot, which is easily taken care of with the addition of a calcium amendment to the soil. During the growing season, water at the soil level of the plants avoiding getting the foliage wet. Prune excess foliage and suckers for maximum production.  More information on pruning suckers here. Pruning also helps to increase airflow for tomatoes and can help prevent diseases. Keep a lookout for pests like whiteflies which can decrease production.

Harvesting & Storage: Harvest when individual fruits are slightly tender to the squeeze of a finger. This may be before the tomatoes are fully colored.

History: The Costoluto Genovese tomato has been around since the 19th century and was famously planted at Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello. This tomato originated in dry Mediterranean climates similar to Southern California and contributes to its success growing in Southern California.
