Suggested Planting Requirements: This summer favorite has a few planting requirements for the best growth and performance. All squashes are warm-season crops and need to be planted in full sun. Even and consistent watering will give you the greatest crop yield. Although dry farming with squash is possible, and commonly practiced in the central coast farming areas of California, in Southern California the best yield will come from good watering habits. Water at the base of the plant to prevent foliar diseases. Mulch to retain moisture. You can grow most squashes in a pot, just remember that you may need to water more frequently as the container will dry out faster than squash planted inground.
Growing Recommendations: Start seeds indoors 3-4 weeks before the last frost, or sow seed directly once soils are at least 70°F. Row covers can be utilized for a pest barrier as birdies and bunnies love munching on squash. As with most cucurbits, mounding provides an optimal growing area. Irrigation should be run if possible, for areas that do not get good rainfall. If you notice fruits and flowers falling off, you may need to ensure good pollination by pollinating by hand. You can do so by simply taking pollen from the male flowers and putting it in the female flowers.
Harvesting & Storage: Harvest when 4″-7″ to keep production high, and for best flavor. Flowers can also be harvested and used in cooking—try them fried and stuffed!
