Description

Known as the “Queen of California Flowers” this huge poppy variety flowers with white blooms that resemble a fried egg. When we first saw this plant decades ago, we instantly fell in love. Matilija poppy is a clumping perennial with long, upright stems and foliage. Plants can reach 5 to 8 feet tall and spread by underground stems.

The plants can be difficult to establish in a garden, but once established will thrive. Be cautious of its underground spreading stems and plant appropriately.

Flowers: California native, great for habitat gardens, low water.

Attracts: Attracts bees and butterflies.

Soil: Adaptable to various soils.

Note that this plant requires a special germination process. Seeds must to exposed to heat/ smoke that simulates a wildfire.
