Suggested Planting Requirements: Okra grows well in nutrient soil with a fairly neutral pH. Adding organic matter to the planting of any vegetable can be healthful. Organic matter such as compost helps tremendously with water retention in the soil.

Growing Recommendations: Okra is a tropical plant that needs plenty of heat. It should be grown in the southern sun during the warm season. Direct sowing is best after seeds have been soaked overnight. During growing periods liquid compost or other fertilizers will help feed this hungry plant.

Harvesting & Storage: Okra is best harvested when it is young and tender. Older okra can become very fibrous and tough. Picking pods regularly will continue to give you new pods. After being cut from the plant, use fresh okra relatively quickly as they do not keep very well. Pod tenderness will vary over the season; as a general rule of thumb, smaller pods tend to be more tender.
