Great Lakes lettuce seed produces crisp, sweet, and crunchy iceberg lettuce heads that are NOTHING like those from the store. Honestly, most people say iceberg has no flavor, but not when they are eating this variety. Description

Great Lakes Lettuce seed produces crisp, sweet and crunchy iceberg lettuce heads that are NOTHING like those from the store. Honestly, most people say iceberg has no flavor, but not when they are eating this variety. It’s our favorite iceberg lettuce, grows well into the warmer months of the spring and can be planted early in the warm months of the fall.

Recommended Planting Requirements: Lettuce is a cool-season plant and can be succession planted most months of the year in mild climates.  Iceberg lettuces tend to be a bit more hearty in warm weather.  For warmer regions, lettuce should be grown in the cooler months or in protected culture to keep it cool. You can use shade cloth to extend the season and keep lettuce from wilting. Light soils with good drainage will give you the best harvest of lettuce. You can direct sow or transplant lettuce. When direct sowing lettuce, make sure you can keep the soil moist the whole time for even germination.

Growing Recommendation: Watering regularly is critical to good growth. In warmer climates watering more often may be needed. Some areas with hot spring and fall conditions should use shade cloth to protect lettuce and extend the season.

Harvesting & Storage: Like most lettuces, you can trim wanted leaves from the plant as needed or harvest the whole head. Great Lakes Lettuce Seed is wonderful lettuce eaten both ways. On our farm, we harvest the heads when they are small, cut them open and eat them whole. They are so crispy and sweet! We love making wedge salads out of the crispy heads.  Here is one of our favorite ways to make it.
