Suggested Planting Requirements: Cabbage and any brassica require lots of organic matter and plenty of plant food to produce happily and quickly. We recommend that you amend the planting area with compost, manure, and organic fertilizer to ensure the plant is adequately fed during it’s growing season. Just amending with compost will likely not give the plant enough nutrients to grow happily. Cabbage and all brassica plants like to grow during the cool months of the year. For Zones 9-10 you can grow cabbage all winter long with row cover if you are in high elevations. Other areas will want to direct sow cabbage seed after the threat of frost is gone or start inside 3-4 weeks before the last frost.
Growing recommendation: On our farm, we start cabbage from seed in the greenhouse all winter long and succession plant to have cabbages all spring and well into the summer. When the weather gets hot you can use shade cloth to prolong the season. Side dressing with an organic fertilizer will help boost production.
Harvesting and Storage: Harvest as soon as the head is the desired size. Cut at the base of the plant. Do not wash until use to prevent premature rot. Store in the refrigerator for weeks.
