Cauliflower is the best tasting when it’s from your own garden! Snowball Cauliflower is a classic heirloom cauliflower selected for its productivity and beautiful whiteheads.
Recommending Planting Requirements: It is best for cauliflower to grow rapidly with little interruption. For zones 9 and 10 this means you will plant cauliflower in the heat of the fall and let it grow through the winter for late winter and early spring harvest. Like all brassicas, cauliflower likes loose, well-drained soil with added organic matter will help you achieve optimal growth.
Growing Recommendations: Cauliflower seeds should be started in 4″ pots or 6 packs under the protection of the shade cloth or in a cool area during in the fall in zones 9 and 10. By planting this early you can ensure that the cauliflower will grow rapidly while the days are long. If you wait until the days are cooler in zones 9 and 10, the day length will be short and cause the cauliflower to grow slowly. This is called the fall effect.
Once seedlings are 3″ tall or have 3 healthy sets of true leaves, you can transplant into well-moistened soil. Depending on weather patterns, they may need to protect from heat with row covers or shade cloth. These plants need plenty of space and moisture. Give the plants adequate space and side-dress with an organic fertilizer for the best results. Keeping the soil moist is a must. Succession plant for repeat production all season long.
Harvesting & Storage: Harvest your snowball heads as soon as the heads are large enough for use. Cauliflower heads may be stored for weeks in a cool place like a refrigerator or root cellar. Prevent premature rot by washing only before eating.
