Arugula, Roquette - Eruca sativa This hardy annual thrives in cool weather. For Southern California growers, arugula may be planted year round in moderate areas. It will be one of the first greens of spring if left in the garden to reseed. The flavor is peppery and can add a kick to any salad or dish. Suggested Planting Requirements: Arugula prefers fertile soils with plenty of added organic matter and a pH of 6.0-7.0. Water moderately and consistently. Arugula can be directly sown or transplanted to a box or container. During warm seasons, sow arugula in a cooler ares of the yard to prevent bolting. Growing Recommendations: Sow seeds directly in shade during summer or full sun during winter. Plant every 2 weeks for a continuous harvest. Harvesting & Storage: Continuous harvest of young leaves stimulates further leaf production in a cut-and-come-again fashion. The flowers are also edible but gather them before opening to prevent reseeding, or allow flowers to go to seed for continual production.
