Garlic seeds or cloves are planted to produce garlic bulbs, one of the earth's most popular cooking spices. With hundreds of varieties and flavor profiles, garlic is a diverse plant group in itself and worth exploring for more than what you can buy at the store! Because store-bought garlic tends to be only a few varieties and has often aged by the time you purchase it, its flavor is at best muted. On the other hand, homegrown garlic is vibrant and full of flavor profiles that change depending on the variety. It can be spicy, sweet, earthy, and more! Plant garlic seeds (cloves) in your garden each season to stock your kitchen with this year-round pantry basic.  Garlic is so important in our kitchen. Almost all recipes start with sauteing fresh garlic! Garlic has a long and deep history in cooking across the globe from Mesopotamia onward. Archeologists have found well-preserved garlic in the tombs of Tutankhamun (c.1325 BC). In addition to its culinary and medicinal uses, garlic has been so important to recipes throughout history that it is part of many cultures' folklore. The most popular cultural narrative is that garlic keeps away werewolves, demons, and vampires. We plant garlic seed on our farm every Halloween just in case a werewolf wanders by! (It's also the best time to plant garlic in Zones 9 and 10.)  Our garlic seed cloves are guaranteed disease-free and grown by the best seed producers in the United States. Choose from our hard neck or soft neck varieties. If you grow garlic in a warm region like Zone 9 or 10, you will need to vernalize or chill your bulbs before planting. Place your garlic in the fridge for 40 days before planting to ensure proper bulb formation.
