Copenhagen Early Market Cabbage Seed

Copenhagen Early Market cabbage seeds produce blonde, short-season cabbages that have ball-shaped heads and weigh 4 to 5 pounds. Many love this variety for delicious sauerkraut paired with corned beef, or in Grandma's famous coleslaw recipe. Suggested Planting Requirements: Cabbage and any brassica require lots of organic matter and plenty of plant food to produce happily and quickly. We recommend that you amend the planting area with compost, manure, and organic fertilizer to ensure the plant is adequately fed during it's growing season. Cauliflower, Snowball ORGANIC

Cauliflower is the best tasting when it's from your own garden! Snowball Cauliflower is a classic heirloom cauliflower selected for its productivity and beautiful whiteheads. Broad Windsor Fava bean is an incredible plant having the capability to fix up to 200 pounds of nitrogen per acre into the soil. For that reason, this bean is used as a valuable cover crop and green manure that also makes for tasty meals! Calendula, Pacific Beauty Seeds

Calendula, Pacific Beauty is a prolific variety of calendula great for all gardens. Its golden-yellow flowers are both medicinal and beautiful! Bees and butterflies love it too! New Zealand Spinach Seeds

New Zealand spinach seeds produce massive amounts of edible green leaves on one small plant! New Zealand spinach is much better suited for the warm areas of Southern California than spinach and other crops that depend on cool, wet weather. A dark green tatsoi that is finely flavored. Black Knight is spoon-shaped, thick, and compact. Like all tatsoi, it has a high vitamin content. If you don't know the joys of growing tatsoi in your garden, you are missing out! This fuss-free plant produces copious amounts of spoon-shaped greens that are essential to many Asian recipes. Every year we grow tatsoi in the cool season and have more than we can use. Tatsoi is an ancient vegetable with spoon-shaped leaves. Very decorative in the way it grows and also delicious. We trialed these Tokyo onions on our farm during the fall/winter of 2018 and were wonderfully surprised! They grew quickly to a stunning size of 2"-3" in diameter. Great mild flavor. The bunching onion is one of the most important types of onions in Asia and has been grown in China for thousands of years. A versatile and mild flavor makes it a great accompaniment to any dish. You can grow them in a pot or on a balcony. They do really well when interplanted with other cool-season crops like cabbages or broccoli. Ethiopian Kale ORGANIC

This dark leafy green outcompetes kales in every way! Ethiopian Kale is tastier, less prone to insect damage, and grows great in Southern California and beyond. It's actually a type of mustard green, but do not let that fool you. The flavor is superb! It's mild and tender making it great for salads, sauteing, soups, just about anything. We were gifted this variety from our great friends over at Redwood Seeds. What a gift it turned out to be. We love this plant! It actually has less oxalic acid than spinach and has almost none of the "bitter" flavor that causes growers to not like kale and similar greens. Feed the Monarchs! Narrow-leaf milkweed, sometimes called Mexican whorled milkweed, is a California native flower that is a preferred food source for monarch butterflies. This flowering perennial blooms in clusters of lavender tinted flowers. Monarchs eat this plant and lay eggs on it—making it an ideal plant to put in your butterfly garden. This subshrub grows about 2-4' tall. As with all milkweeds, the seed pods will swell and burst with seeds attached to silky hairs. Garlic seed is so easy to grow and produces incredibly flavored garlic. This garlic seed variety called Inchelium Red is certified organic, disease-free, and productive in Southern California and beyond. The two types of garlic you can grow, hardneck and softneck, are named for their stems. Softneck types are the kind typically sold in grocery stores. The leaves of softneck garlic stay soft and flexible even after they've been cured—these are the ones you sometimes see braided together! They are lovely and ornamental for gifting. Shop hardneck garlic. Chilling Garlic If you live in a southern state that does not receive adequate chill hours, we recommend that you refrigerate your garlic seeds (cloves) for 40 days prior to planting. Continued cool temperatures encourage sprouting. By placing your heads of garlic in the fridge for 40 days, you can make sure they have received adequate chill hours. You may even notice them sprouting in the fridge before you remove them to plant. It is not recommended to move your garlic back and forth from a cool location and a warm condition, as this can cause drying out of the bulbs. If your area gets a significant chill, putting your garlic in the fridge may not be necessary. For areas of San Diego that do not get adequate chill hours, we recommended you refrigerate your bulbs for 40 days prior to planting. Sow Cloves that have been split from the bulb should be planted within 1-2 weeks. Separate individual garlic cloves from the bulb. Direct sow in soil, about 4-6" apart with the pointed end up (blunt end down) at a planting depth of 1-2" into the ground. Rows should be 1-2' apart allowing room for plant growth. Grow Grows in full sun. It is not recommended to plant garlic in the same location as the previous year. Garlic is adaptable to various, moderately fertile soil types. Grows well in raised beds and containers. Good drainage is necessary to avoid rotting or disease. Garlic is ready in 290 days . Leaves turning brown and falling over are indications that the plant is ready for harvest. Carefully dig up the bulbs to harvest. It's a good idea to dig up one or two plants to determine readiness before harvesting an entire crop! Garlic heads should be plump with cloves and the outer skin should be thick, dry, and papery. Garlic requires a drying method called curing for proper storage. To cure softneck garlic: Gently remove dirt (do not wash). Leave bulbs to dry in the sun for a few hours immediately following their harvest. Spread out in a well-ventilated area, out of the direct sun, for another 2-3 weeks until fully dry. Can be hung or placed on a drying rack/screen. Softneck garlic stems may be kept long and braided. Can also remove stem and leaves about 1-2" from the bulb. Keep in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space. Garlic braids may be hung for storage. A mesh bag works well for storage if stems have been cut. Cured softneck varieties have a longer shelf-life than hardneck varieties. Eat Garlic is excellent fresh, cooked, canned, pickled, infused into vinegar, dehydrated, frozen, and more. The applications of garlic are limited only to your imagination! Repeat: Garlic is best planted in the fall as early as September (and no later than December) in Zones 9 & 10. Introduced in 1892 and still a favorite—for good reason! Great for fresh eating or canning, this is a superb beet with versatile uses in the kitchen. Growers can use the greens or the globes. Globes grow about 3" in diameter and greens can be harvested all season long. This variety of beet sprouts well in cold spring conditions and can stand the warm fall conditions of Southern California and beyond. Suggested Planting Requirements: Beets are cool-season crops that enjoy cooler temperatures and even moisture. For Southern California, the best beet growing season is from about October to May, but many coastal climates can grow beets year-round. Use shade cloth to extend your growing seasons. The ideal soil is loose, sandy, and well-draining. For those wanting to grow in-ground, we suggest you amend heavily with compost, leaf mold, and other amendments to help loosen up the soil and give it a healthy soil structure. Carrots are annual crops that grow in the cooler months of the year. In mild climates like that of Southern California, you can grow carrots year-round with a bit of extra work. This particular variety is a classic carrot that produces tasty, reliable carrots. Ready in only 65-75 days, this finely flavored carrot does well as a bunching carrot and as a storage carrot. "Nantes" is a type of carrot distinguished by their blunt ends that do better in heavier, rockier soils. Our Scarlet Nantes carrots are selected specifically for their productivity in the less than desirable soils of the American southwest. Suggested Planting Requirements: Carrots do best in light, aerated, and well-drained soil. We know that many gardeners and farmers do not have the blessing of such soils naturally. To get the best carrot production out of your garden or farm you need to cultivate the soil to create the lightest soils that you can. For Southern California growers, that may mean working the soil with a tiller to incorporate evenly into the soil large amounts of compost. Waltham 29 broccoli is widely adapted, drought-tolerant, and a great selection to grow for a fall crop. It will continue to produce side shoots after the main head is harvested—side shoots will produce for 7-8 weeks after the main head is harvested. Large Leaf Sorrel Seed

Large Leaf Sorrel seeds are a must in every gardeners' seed collection! Large Leaf Sorrel seeds produce large tongue-shaped greens that are tangy, lemony, and so tasty! These brightly flavored greens are one of the first to grow in the spring in colder areas. In Zones 9 and 10 this plant can be a perennial. We toss this lemony herb in salads, dressings, on fish, and in soups. It's particularly good in a seafood soup. Suggested Planting Requirements: Sorrel can be grown as a baby green or a full-grown green. You can start seed inside or in starter pots and transplant out when you are ready. By transplanting out you can reduce competition with weeds. You may also direct sow. Seeds are very small and need light for germination. For the best germination, cover seeds lightly with a very thin later of finely sifted soil. Growing Recommendations: If direct sowing you can plant seeds in freshly worked soil. The top 1" of soil should be soft and finely raked. For best germination, cover seeds with finely sifted soil or potting mix, then press down gently to keep the tiny seeds in place.
