Description

Arugula – Roquette

Eruca sativa

This hardy annual thrives in cool weather. For Southern California growers, arugula may be planted year-round in moderate areas. It will be one of the first greens of spring if left in the garden to reseed. The flavor is peppery and can add a kick to any salad or dish.

Suggested Planting Requirements: Arugula prefers fertile soils with plenty of added organic matter and a pH of 6.0-7.0.  Water moderately and consistently. Arugula can be directly sown or transplanted to a box or container. During warm seasons, sow arugula in a cooler area of the yard to prevent bolting.

Growing Recommendations: Sow seeds directly in shade during summer, or full sun during winter. Plant every 2 weeks for a continuous harvest.

Harvesting & Storage: Continuous harvest of young leaves stimulates further leaf production in a cut-and-come-again fashion. The flowers are also edible but gather them before opening to prevent reseeding, or allow flowers to go to seed for continual production.
