The brilliantly colored blooms are bright and fiery. We grow calendula, pacific beauty on the farm as a beneficial flower to attract beneficial insects and we use the edible petals to garnish dishes. If left to reseed in the garden, you will notice volunteers the following spring.
Recommended planting requirements: This cool-season flower crop is relatively fuss-free. It can be grown in poor soil and in many parts of San Diego and beyond it can be grown almost year-round. For those who have cold winters, plant seeds 2-3 weeks before the last frost in your starter plugs or your greenhouse. For those who do not have cold winters, you can start calendula seeds in early spring for blooms as soon as the days lengthen and warm up.
Growing Recommendations: Plant 1/4″ deep in a flower bed or broadcast seeds to fill in empty spaces in the garden. Plant in full sun during cool seasons. Will reseed. For continuous production, prune dead stems.
Harvest: Cut flowers in the early morning for freshest and longest-lasting cut flowers. Use blooms in dishes, drinks, and salads to add a pop of color.
Medicinal Properties: Calendula has been used for centuries as an antifungal, and anti-inflammatory herb. Calendula oil is often used to relieve skin irritations such as diaper rashes and eczema. Learn how to make calendula cream here.
